HR’s Role in the Physical Workplace

Physical workplace - this is an interesting area that the White Paper discusses, an area not traditionally in the domain of Human Resources.  However, due to its considerable impact on morale, employee engagement, mobility and performance it is an area that is increasingly important.

Pam Dew, National Manager of Bridge Consulting has delivered employee training, development and engagement programs for many years, and she believes “Many executives would be surprised at how often the perceived barriers of the physical workplace are brought to the forefront in training and development sessions”.

Managing Yourself: Bringing out the best in your people

Some leaders drain all the intelligence and capability out of their teams. Because they need to be the most capable person in the room. These managers shut down the smarts of others, ultimately stifling the flow of ideas. At the other extreme are leaders who care less about flaunting their own IQs and more about fostering a culture of intelligence in their companies.

Under these "multipliers," employees don't just feel smarter; they become smarter. This article explores the ways in which multipliers manage five areas--talent, culture, strategy, decision making, and execution--much differently than their less-enlightened colleagues (the diminishers).

Students creating an ocean of shoes

Many less fortune people in third world countries cannot afford good shoes and this greatly reduces their chance of finding good jobs. Gently worn, pre-loved shoes can make a huge difference.

One of our clients, TAFE St Leonard’s in NSW is involved in an initiative to help stop poverty. This year TAFE students across NSW are collecting shoes to be sent to Haiti, Nepal and Africa. Their target is 100,000 pairs by the end of 2010, currently they have collected over 40,000 pairs.

It is estimated that 300 million children around the world have never owned a pair of shoes. In first world countries such as ours, we often dispose of shoes which are hardly worn or have plenty of life left in them. Most of the pairs we throw out are worth more than 2 or 3 months savings to people in third world countries.

If you would like to donate some "gently worn" or new shoes or set up a small or large collection point click here to email for more information.
